- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons espresso powder (optional)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup hot brewed coffee
- 1 and 1/4 cups unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 3 and 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar (for frosting)
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 3–5 Tablespoons heavy cream (for frosting)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (for frosting)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and espresso powder (if using).
- In another bowl, mix the oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until smooth. Gradually add the dry ingredients and then stir in the hot coffee until combined.
- Divide the batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 23–26 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
