  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water (between 105°F-115°F)
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup shortening (melted)
  • Vegetable or peanut oil (for frying)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 4 2/3 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons honey (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for glaze)
  • Warm water (as needed for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. In another bowl, mix the warm water, honey (warm if necessary), egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Melt the shortening and add it to the wet ingredients; mix until incorporated.
  4. Attach a dough hook to your stand mixer. Add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture.
  5. Mix on low speed until just combined.
  6. Increase speed to medium and knead for about 8 minutes until slightly sticky but workable.
  7. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in an oiled glass bowl, turning to coat with oil.
  8. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel; let rise in a warm area for 1-2 hours until nearly doubled.
  9. Whisk together cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl; set aside.
  10. Turn out risen dough onto a lightly floured surface; roll into a rectangle approximately 12” long by 8” wide.
  11. Dust with cinnamon sugar mixture while leaving edges clean; gently press into dough.
  12. Continue with rolling and cutting steps as outlined in your original instructions until all pieces are shaped!
