  • 6 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 4 sticks unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 2/3 cup strawberry preserves

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, combine buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and hot coffee.
  4. Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for 30–40 minutes. Cool before frosting.
  6. For the buttercream: Beat butter until creamy; gradually add powdered sugar and mix in strawberry preserves and vanilla until smooth.
  7. Frost the cooled cake layers with buttercream and decorate as desired.
