  • 1 stick unsalted butter, diced
  • 3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons Kahlua, or other coffee liqueur
  • 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • Ground cinnamon, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and unsweetened chocolate together until smooth. Let cool slightly.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the melted mixture with granulated sugar, eggs (one at a time), instant espresso powder, vanilla extract, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, sift together the flour and any remaining dry ingredients; fold into the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared dish and bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  6. While cooling, beat room temperature butter with sifted powdered sugar; add heavy cream, Kahlua, and espresso powder until fluffy.
  7. Once cooled, cut into bite-sized pieces and top with Kahlua buttercream.
